Travertine tile ideal uses
In all my time tiling with travertine I can safely say that you can use it pretty much anywhere in your home, from kitchens to bathrooms I've seen it all. But just like George Orwell says, some are more equal than others. Travertine comes in a wonderful array of colours, which means you can create warmth and character in any room or setting.
Bathrooms
Travertine looks especially elegant in bathrooms. My suggestion to you is to select a gold-coloured large format honed travertine tile and combine it with brass or chrome bathroom fitting. Then install a top quality enamel bath tub, toilet and wash basin. Tile the entire room in travertine, from floor to ceiling. Add a little bit of interest with a nice patterned complimentary border about 3ft from floor height to break it up. Then with the shower, do not use a standard plastic shower basin. Instead, opt for a wet room look with a sunken tiled shower basin. Done right, this look is simply amazing. Out of all the possible locations for using travertine, above all I would recommend installing travertine in your bathroom!
Hallways & living space
If you have a good sized open plan hallway leading into a living room or kitchen then a travertine tile will really open the area up, making it light and inviting for guests. My suggestion would be to get a large format rectangular tile that should be laid lengthways from the front door down the hallway, which will draw the eye down and along the floor creating a sense of space. When installing travertine on a floor like this then I would recommend that you don't use wide grout joints, instead you would be best placed to use very fine grout joints. If you were to use the standard width of grout joints you risk ruining the continuity of the tiles and the flowing grain in them. Don't hesitate to tile the entire ground floor of your building, this means that there is a much increased sense of size and space. So all in all, you basically can't go wrong with a travertine floor for your hallway or living space.
Kitchens
If you are thinking of installing travertine in your kitchen then make sure that you buy a good quality honed tile that has no pitting. In a kitchen, where spills are frequent, it is important that your tile cannot absorb any dirt. Again, go for a large format tile and install it with as little grout as possible to maximize the aura of space and freedom. The great thing about travertine in your kitchen is that it ties in so well with your cupboards offering a flattering and neutral background colour that also beautifully ties in with the likes of a nice tumbled marble wall tile. The only drawback in a kitchen is that you must ensure the floor is well sealed, so be aware that it will take some work to keep it in good condition.
